The stars are alive, child! Did you know that? Everything out there is alive, and there are grand purpose abroad!

She had met many soldiers in her time. Not in her six years as a princess. Guards yes, they had men and women, trained in brief gentle spars guarding the palace gates, and the kingdom borders. But not true soldiers, no one ready to go to battle, to protect the weak. But Elysium. Elysium had been full of them, many of them her friends, her people. The brotherhood was full of them, assassins, who she healed when needed, though she wasn’t long to them.

In Crucis she met some, Neeve ara, part of the kings guard, a bubbly naive little creature, sweet as the sap from the trees. Vander himself quite fierce, and many others. Heretic soldiers she met, and hated in crossing. Etain, the wolf queen, herself Io Kairavis main weapon. Cavalier, her beautiful love, who made a name of herself despite having eyes that served no purpose except in which Luvena could lose herself.

But Lyrus had been the breeding ground for warriors. Long home to the fiercest of the land, filled with fighters who would stop at nothing to defend their beliefs. Who Vega blessed with the fiercest of spirits, and the strongest forms. Galileo, Syrilth, and so many more. Eremurus would have been well on his way to it.  Perhaps she too, would have joined them, had Elysium not been stolen away from them.

She had met more in Novus still, Galileo, once more. Below Zero, a woman who wished to serve as one.  El Toro, who had managed nothing other than to call her Luvely before getting on his merry way. And more still, so many she had lost count. And still there was no end to their coming and goings. She had met no individuals with more drive then a fighter, no one else with that same passion, whether they used it to harm or protect, it burned through each and every one of them.

She was determined to burn just as brightly.

Though flames made her head spin in terror, made her heart plummet to her hooves. She longed to burn as brightly as the torches that lit the night court, when Caligo’s moon rose above them. To let that light shine through the spaces between her ribs, and the gap between her withers. To give everyone else something else to stare at, besides her weary bones.

The night court was louder at night then it was in the day. People milled around regardless, but at night the markets lit up in sequence with the stars, and the court came to life. Entertainers danced in the streets. In the city square, a woman, with braided hair danced in a circle around the fountain, her tresses dampened by the mist. Others stood to the side, their music bringing the performance to life. One played a violin, a instrument she had learned from mesnyi, though this one was played differently, each movement of the bow releasing a quick note, the perfect tune for footwork. Another sung, lilting lyrics, about the day Caligo had taken the sunlight.

She settled herself against one of the walls to watch, taken by the performance. She watched others gather too, to come see. Her gaze was caught by an outlier, a large man, who for whatever reason, seemed out of place in the court. Perhaps he came from elsewhere, on his way to the markets. Or perhaps he was from night, and she simply hadn’t seen him before.  Curious, she wove through the crowd towards him, dropping a coin in the violin case on her way.

“Enjoying the show?” she asked casually, her voice barely singing over the violin.

TRISTAN

I'll come to thee by the moonlight,
though hell should bar the way

F
irelight danced on the edges of his vision. A performer twirled amidst a fountain spray of mist, their braid sopping as it snapped out behind them with every graceful twist. A violinist performed a jaunty, energetic tune as a vocalist, sweet and elegant, sang to an entertained crowd of onlookers.

They sang of Caligo taking the sun.

Something within his chest kicked hard and Tristan bristled, suddenly wishing he were anywhere else.

Uncomfortably he shifted, pulling the mantle of his cloak just a little tighter around the curve of his shoulders. The street was so crowded with onlookers that he knew he could slip away without any trouble. Mentally he called for Merlin, knowing that the Wyvern was off chasing the local Pygmy Dragons, but before he could turn away and disappear into the throng of moving bodies, a gentle voice to his left caught his attention and halted him in his tracks.

’Enjoying the show?’

Jaw working hard with strain, with panic, Tristan sucked in a deep breath, rolled a shoulder, and turned his head to regard who had spoken. The knight didn’t recognize her. She was a gaunt, thin thing, and his first thought was that she was, perhaps, ill. Such a direct train of mind was rude, however, and so he immediately focused on her other features, turquoise eyes burning with a concoction of overwhelming dread and curiosity.

Dainty, taller than he by just a lick, yet it was clear by sheer bulk alone that Tristan himself was the larger of the two. Even shrouded by the slate-blue of his cloak, the knight knew his body could not be hidden when standing beside one so frail. Uncomfortably he shifted from foot to foot, the tap of the Genesis blade scabbard at his hip a familiar touch, but it would not save him from the demons running rampant at the songs of Caligo’s twisted torment.

Realizing that he had been staring for what was, perhaps, too long, the knight cleared his throat and spoke up a raspy answer, the lie like bile on his tongue.
”... I suppose.” Then, because he had absolutely no idea how to handle anyone or socialize properly, he went on rather dumbly even as his insides screamed for him to leave this place behind, ”Are you?”

The stars are alive, child! Did you know that? Everything out there is alive, and there are grand purpose abroad!

Despite the tune's cheerful jig, it was somewhat haunting in nature, an endless night devouring the world, swallowing the sun eternally. A fate that had been reversed at some point, though Luvena knew not the tale of what had come to pass, in Novus' history.
She watched the mans jaw work back and forth, and wondered how with just three words she had managed to trouble him so. She realized then that he was not in fact, taller then herself, but still she was dwarfed by him.

He was made of muscle and vigor, while she was cloth draped over bone, a shadow of life.  His words spilled out awkwardly, in stark contrast to the easy lyrics that floated throughout the square. “I don’t much care what they're singing about” she replied with ease. “But they do perform beautifully. They didn’t have such music where I come from.”

She paused, thinking back to what music they did have in herstial. All raspy reeds and percussives. Each song carried such a haunting melody, almost all were cautionary tales or lullabies of a sort. She remembered the tune that was carried on the winter solstice, where they burned pillars of fire into the skies (ones later echoed by a villainous man) to celebrate the death of Ma Testri and her terror. It opened with slow windy reeds, that mingled with the wind, and a quiet drone of humming followed, as they gathered before the feast.

“I take it you aren’t from Denocte” she stated, watching the way he listened to their words, seemingly disturbed by them. She too wasn’t sure how much she loved the word themselves, but she’d heard them spoken by Denoctians enough that they no longer surprised her.
